civil and environmental engineering are the fields of engineering most relevant
to our daily lives. civil engineering systems are the infrastructure supporting
modern life -- buildings, roads and bridges, railroads and airports, water
supply and waste water treatment facilities, ports, waterways and dams. while
these systems are essential to all modern activities, they are also invisible
to most people, because they have become so efficient and reliable that we can
take them for granted -- except when their performance degrades due to demand
growth and congestion, or on the rare occasions when they fail because of
natural disasters (floods, hurricanes and earthquakes), because of natural
aging processes (corrosion and erosion), and even more rarely because of errors
in design or construction.
